Subject: A really good 95 show and excellent SBD!!
Everybody knows that there are some 95 shows that have moments that are downright tough and shocking to listen to. But over time, it has been an unfortunate thing that those moments have become the reason many just totally dismiss these last tours of Grateful Dead music. It just simply is not the case and the facts lie in the music. What partly makes this show really worth listening to is the awesome quality of the recording. Its true this show gets a little overshadowed by the 21st.... that show has one of the best friend of the devils and in some people's opinion one of the best foolish Hearts ever played. Which is a pretty strong statement considering this era, but I understand the sentiments
. Anyways, it took until now for me to sit down and really listen to this show. There are some really great moments in the first set and versions of song that stand up with any, like little red rooster! By no means am I going to sit here and try to say that these shows feature Top Notch Jerry guitar solos, but his playing is more than passable and when you mix that in with the fact that the other guys are playing as good as they can, that gives you a four-star show in my opinion.
the second set has a great set list! The eyes of the world has this wonderful percussion playing during it, and super classy clean tone piano, making this one have a very unique sound for this era... Jerry never really takes off, in fact he somehow enters in the song one beat off but by the end of the first verse he's lined up with the downbeat again and everything is smooth sailing from there on. However, the beginning of Uncle John's Band is really nice and this is one of two Uncle John's from early Spring that blow up into BIG psychedelic Jam improv fests that make them very notable, imo "must hear" versions. It sounds to be like the drummers have really started drums a little early and are practically running the band members off the stage, which is probably why it says drums is only 7 minutes. It's really more like 12:00 with the last 5 minutes of Uncle John's mixing in with the music. Very cool stuff hear!!!! version worth checking out.
Drums Space segments from 95 are worth listening to any of the shows alone... they have gotten into a territory by this point where you could never be disappointed with a drums space from this era. Some of them are total free form music art masterpieces. Especially later in the spring. Very much unlike previous years where I sort of understand why people skip drums space. But in 95, they are often the highlights of the show and that's not because the music isn't good. The long sequence of songs after Space is unique for 95. Jerry seems to cut the guitar solo extremely short and Not Fade Away but the last two songs of this show reveal the band as a vocal Powerhouse that is right up there with soundimg as good as they've ever been vocally anywhere in their career. Vince is a five-star player in 95 and his contributions unfortunately overshadowed by the drama surrounding Jerry, which is a shame because too many people just throw vince under the bus without ever really coming to terms and realizing what an amazing player he became within the band during these last tours. Anyways, if you're looking to get the complete picture about how the bands sound continue to evolve and how the 95 sound is different from the 94 sandwiches different from the 93 sound Etc etc, this is a good show to listen to even though there are more famous and five star shows from 1995. I'm on a mission to review them all!!! 4 stars, 3.5 for playing and 5 for sound.
